Procrastination is the silent killer of goals, dreams, and progress. It’s that little voice that says, “I’ll do it later.” But "later" never comes.
If you’re tired of delaying the things you know you should do, this blog is for you. At The FR4MULA, one of the most common challenges we see in our clients is procrastination. But here’s the good news: Procrastination isn’t a personality trait—it’s a habit. And habits can be changed.
Here are 7 powerful strategies to crush procrastination, take action, and build unstoppable momentum.
1️⃣ Use the 5-Minute Rule (Just Start for 5 Minutes)
If you’re feeling resistance to a task, your brain is exaggerating how "hard" it is. Most of the time, the hardest part is starting.
The Solution:
Commit to 5 minutes only. Tell yourself, “I’m only doing 5 minutes, and if I want to stop after that, I can.”
Once you start, momentum takes over and you’ll likely continue.
Example:
If you don’t want to work out, just stretch for 5 minutes.
If you don’t want to work on a project, just write for 5 minutes.
2️⃣ Break It Down (Micro-Tasks Beat Big Tasks)
Procrastination happens when you see a task as too big or overwhelming. Your brain thinks, "This is too much to handle right now." So, you delay.
The Solution:
Break big tasks into smaller tasks. Instead of "write a blog post," change it to "write the introduction."
Break large projects into 5-10 micro-steps so they feel achievable.
Example:
Instead of "clean the house," break it into "clean the kitchen for 10 minutes."
Instead of "launch my website," break it into "buy a domain name."
3️⃣ Eliminate Your Escape Routes (Remove Distractions)
Procrastination thrives on distractions. If your phone is buzzing with notifications or your TV is in sight, you’ll find excuses to stop.
The Solution:
Put your phone on Do Not Disturb mode.
Close all unnecessary tabs on your computer.
Use the 2-screen rule: You can only have 2 screens open (like your work tab and a notes tab).
Example: If you’re working on your fitness goals, clear your workout space of distractions. Remove your phone or turn off notifications.
4️⃣ Commit to Public Accountability (Don’t Go It Alone)
If no one knows what you’re doing, it’s easy to quit. But if you declare your goal publicly, you’re more likely to follow through.
The Solution:
Tell a coach, mentor, or accountability partner about your goal.
Declare it publicly (post it on social media) and update people on your progress.
Example:
Post on social media, "I’m committed to running 3x this week. Hold me accountable."
If you’re joining The FR4MULA, tell your coach your weekly commitments and ask for check-ins.
5️⃣ Set a Hard Deadline (No Deadline = No Urgency)
If your task has no deadline, you’ll delay it. Your brain says, “I’ll do it later.” The only way to create urgency is to set a hard deadline.
The Solution:
Set a specific deadline for each task and block time on your calendar to complete it.
Add consequences if you miss it (like telling your coach you’ll donate $20 if you don’t hit the deadline).
Example:
"I will finish my workout by 6 PM today or I owe $20 to my coach."
"I will submit this project to my manager by Friday at 12 PM."
6️⃣ Beat Your Inner Perfectionist (Progress Beats Perfection)
Many people procrastinate because they’re waiting for the "perfect moment" or "perfect plan." But perfection is a lie.
The Solution:
Focus on progress, not perfection. Set the goal to "start messy and improve later."
Write this down: "Done is better than perfect."
Example:
Instead of trying to "perfectly meal prep for the week," just prep one meal.
Instead of trying to "perfectly design a website," just create a rough draft.
7️⃣ Reward Yourself for Taking Action (Not Just Finishing)
Most people only reward themselves when they finish a task. But if you want to crush procrastination, you should reward yourself just for starting.
The Solution:
After you start, give yourself a reward (like 5 minutes of free time or a favorite snack).
Pair hard tasks with a reward you love (like listening to your favorite podcast while you work).
Example:
After completing 5 minutes of movement, give yourself 5 minutes of relaxation.
After working on a blog post for 20 minutes, watch 10 minutes of your favorite show.
